ST. DEMETRIOS, 16th c.

St. Demetrios is a three-aisled timber-roofed basilica, that subsequently expanded to the west, following the demolition of the western wall of the main church and the construction of a tribune. 16th-c. painting decoration and evidences of earlier decoration survive in the interior of the church. It also features a particularly noteworthy wood-carved iconostasis of the early 18th c. The dedication of the church to St. Demetrios, the ‘myrrh-streaming’ patron saint of Thessaloniki, reflects the close links between Veria and the ‘co-reigning city’.
