CHRIST PANTOCRATOR, 16th – 18th c.

Christ Pantocrator was initially a single-naved timber-roofed church. Its northern wall was demolished in the 16th c. in order to create a northern aisle with a prothesis. In 1687, an arcade was added to its southern side. The church retains mural compositions of the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries. Traces of a first layer of mural paintings can be seen under the 16th-c. scenes on the eastern wall. 16th-c. depictions survive in the apse and sanctuary, in the two upper bands of the nave and the northern aisle. Certain additions to the faces of saints on the 16th-c. layer and dedicatory depictions in the 1687 arcade are attributed to the 1726 wall decoration. Certain scenes in the prothesis area are dated to just before 1727.
