SAINT VLASIOS, 14th – 18th c.

Upon entering the labyrinthine roads of Kyriotisa, there stands out the Palaeologan church of St. Vlasios in Gr. Xenopoulou Square, with the archaizised angels in the sanctuary apse that some attribute to Kalliergis, the painter of the mural decoration in the church of Christ the Saviour of Ignatios Kalothetos. The single-naved timber-roofed church of St. Vlasios, of the early 14th c., underwent successive conversions and additions, as an arcade was added to its southern side in the second half of the 14th c., while in the 16th c. the church expanded considerably following the demolition of the western and part of the northern wall, as well as the addition of an ambulatory on all three sides. The last intervention took place in the early 18th c., when the northern wall of the ambulatory was reconstructed. The initial layer of the mural decoration is characterised by iconographic features and aesthetic choices similar to the decoration of the church of the Resurrection of Christ, and have previously been associated with the artistic production of Kalliergis, while according to recent views it is the work of a local workshop inspired by the art of Kalliergis in the church of Christ, and is dated in the decade 1320-1330. The mural paintings of the 14th-c. are placed in the original part of the church and the somewhat more recent southern arcade. It is quite likely that later mural paintings of the main church have covered certain 14th-c. works. The depictions in the apse and the eastern wall of the sanctuary, the northern wall of the sanctuary and the southern wall of the church date back to the early 14th c. The decoration of the southern external façade of the initial church and the eastern wall of the southern arcade is attributed to the second half of the 14th c. The repair of the church during the 16th c., which resulted in alterations of the original edifice, was accompanied by new murals on the southern wall of the central aisle, the intrados of the large western arch, the western wall of the ambulatory, the niche and the wall of the prothesis, as well as the pillar separating the central aisle and the northern arcade. During the 18th c., mural paintings were illustrated in two zones on the northern wall of the church. During the same period, minor interventions in the interior, such as the blocking of the door of the original southern wall, were covered with mural paintings.
